As part of its commitment to advancing inclusive and equitable quality education for all, the National Education Coalition (NEC) South Sudan participated in a live radio talk show on Voice of Hope FM in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal. The discussion brought together a PTA representative and a Civil Society Organization (CSO) representative to explore the theme: The Importance of Inclusive Education.
The interactive discussion provided an opportunity for community members to call in and share their experiences, concerns, and recommendations on the state of education in their communities. The conversation highlighted several challenges affecting access to quality and inclusive education, particularly for children with disabilities.
Among the key issues raised by callers were:
The barriers faced by children with disabilities in accessing quality education and appropriate learning support.
Low teacher motivation due to inadequate incentives and limited support.
The absence of school feeding programmes, which contributes to poor attendance and increased dropout rates.
The shortage of female teachers, limiting girls’ access to role models and gender-responsive support in schools.
Non-functional Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in some schools, weakening community participation and school accountability.
Poor coordination and communication between schools and parents, affecting learners’ welfare and academic progress.
The limited availability of teachers trained in inclusive education, including those with sign language interpretation skills to support learners with hearing impairments.
Participants emphasized that addressing these challenges requires a collective effort from government institutions, development partners, school management, communities, parents, and civil society organizations. Strengthening inclusive education means ensuring that every child regardless of gender, disability, or background has equal opportunities to learn, participate, and succeed.
